Naomi Mendel
Naomi Mendel (b. 1981, Jerusalem; lives and works in Tel Aviv) holds an MFA from Haifa University, a BFA from Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem, and an Art Teacher's Certificate from Seminar HaKibbutzim College. Additionally, she studied at Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, Utrecht, Amsterdam.
Mendel’s work has featured in solo exhibitions, including at the Artventures Gallery, California; Hanina Gallery, Tel Aviv; and at the Dana Gallery, Kibbutz Yad Mordechai. It has also been presented in group exhibitions, including at the UDK Gallery, Berlin; the Haifa Museum of Art; the Eretz Israel Museum; and Nulobaz Gallery, Tel Aviv.
In recent years Mendel has focused on paintings of greenery and thickets, in a bid to capture the hidden light within such dense growth. She presents the painting as a place of refuge to be viewed at almost ground level, like the point of view of an animal passing through it. These hiding places bear both emotional and physical effects. Photos courtesy of Naomi Mendel studio; installation photos by Liat Elbling.
